==Biography==
He has a younger [[Bates' brother|brother]] who he would take to [[Basketball]] games. {{Cite|ATL|Letters From Pegasus}} He became part of the [[Atlantis expedition]] and during their preparations to leave, he was trying to get [[Doctor|Dr.]] [[Carson Beckett]] to check his gear but was met with resistance. [[Colonel]] [[Marshall Sumner]] came to see what was happening and Beckett said that he didn't work for Sumner but for [[Elizabeth Weir]], Bates said he was told the same thing and Sumner told him that's what his side arm is for. After arriving on [[Atlantis]] and discovering that they may have to evacuate, Bates joined the team to visit [[Athos]] to see if it was viable for their evacuation. When the sun came up, he noticed a nearby ruined [[City of the Ancestors|city]] and reported to Sumner. The [[Wraith]] attacked at night and he fired a rocket at one of their [[Dart]]s and took it out before he and Sumner were taken by another dart. He awoke on a [[Hive ship]] where the Wraith came and took Sumner. They were rescued by [[John Sheppard]] and [[Aiden Ford]] and taken back to Atlantis. {{Cite|ATL|Rising}}

Weir chose Bates to oversee the security on Atlantis. After [[Sheppard's team]] encountered the Wraith on most of their missions, Weir believed there was a spy on Atlantis. He joined a meeting where he said that if they were compromised then it was probably one of the [[Athosian]]s. He recommended preventing the Athosians from accessing sensitive areas and began to organize interviews with the Athosians for Weir. When a [[Lantea mainland|landmass]] was discovered on [[Lantea]], Bates suggested sending the Athosians there. After Sheppard's team was again attacked and returned without [[Teyla Emmagan]] and [[Aiden Ford]], Bates was suspicious so when Teyla dialed in, stating that Ford was unconscious, Bates told Weir that allowing Teyla to return could open the city to attack. Weir allowed her to come back and she dragged back Ford. Bates gathered Teyla's things and had [[Meredith Rodney McKay]] examine them. He later reported that [[Teyla's necklace]] was a [[Wraith Transmitter]] for locating [[Lantean]]s and had been activated by Sheppard. {{Cite|ATL|Suspicion}}

He helped with transporting a [[Steve|Wraith]] prisoner to [[Hoff]]. {{Cite|ATL|Poisoning the Well}} He led a team to [[Manaria]] and negotiated for food for the expedition. {{Cite|ATL|Underground}} He was ordered by Weir to lock the [[Atlantis Gym|gym]] when Sheppard wanted to leave to help with quarantine efforts during an outbreak. After learning that Teyla had connected to a Wraith mind, he blamed her for giving away the base's location. While searching for new Alpha Site, Bates told Sheppard that taking Teyla with them was a risk as the Wraith might learn from her the location but Sheppard shut him down. When Sheppard's team had to return when coming under attack, Bates blamed Teyla before being told that they were not attacked by the Wraith but by a [[T-Rex creature]]. Teyla confronted Bates and when she said that accusing her of helping the Wraith was an insult, Bates responded that he was well aware it was and Teyla struck him. They were pulled apart by Sheppard and Ford and Bates was told to walk away. While on duty he was found by a [[Bob (The Siege, Part 1)|Wraith]] who was hiding in the city who attacked Bates, giving his five broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a [[Concussion|concussion]] and a subdural [[Hematoma|hematoma]]. {{Cite|ATL|The Siege, Part 1}}

The Air Force gave him an honorable discharge due to his injuries and he was then approached by the [[International Oversight Advisory]] about running a field division dealing specifically with operational threats on Earth. In [[2008]] he was reunited with [[John Sheppard]] and met [[Ronon Dex]] after a [[Replicator (Outcast)|Replicator]] was found to have been built on Earth and escaped. He went with a team to find it but was knocked out by Dr. [[Richard Poole]]. When they discovered that the woman helping them, [[Ava Dixon (Outcast)|Ava Dixon]], was also a Replicator Bates said the IOA wouldn't allow her to go free or work at [[Stargate Command]] as she was too much of a security risk. {{Cite|ATL|Outcast}}
